It’s been … a while since your last visit to the dentist. If it’s been closer to 6 years than the recommended 6 months (or less), then there could be a reason for that.
You may have dental anxiety.
If you do, please don’t feel bad. Millions of American experience dental fear to one degree or another. It’s also a good reason to ask about our sedation dentistry at the office of Dr. David L. Ouellette. This could be just what you need to return to the dentist for the oral care that you need and deserve to have the healthiest mouth possible.

How Sedation Could Help You
People have many reasons that they feel nervous about visiting the dentist.
Many of them had bad experiences when they were younger. This may include memories of a painful procedure or a feeling like they were going to gag. For other patients, it was the dentist who was the problem. We’ve heard stories of dentists who were highly critical when a patient had tooth decay or some other common issue.
You also may have anxiety because of stories you heard from someone else or by how dentists have often been portrayed on movies and television.
All of these are understandable reasons to feel anxious about making a dental appointment. They also are reasons you should talk to us about how sedation could ease your worries.
The first benefit of sedation is that it helps to put your mind at ease. When you feel relaxed, it makes your dental appointments easier for you and for the people who are caring for you.
Sedation also provide an anesthetic benefit, so you won’t feel any pain during your cleaning or other treatment. Likewise, sedation can block gagging sensations as well.
With regard to the judgmental dental professionals, you won’t experience that in our office. We understand that no one wants to have cavities, gum disease, or other problems. Our focus is on helping you improve and then maintaining your oral health.
Choosing Your Sedation Option
At Dr. Ouellette’s office, you also have the choice of two kinds of dental sedation. Both can be effective, and you may prefer one to the other. At the same time, many patients who needed sedation dentistry during their initial visits with us are now so comfortable that they make appointments without any sedation whatsoever.
So what are your options?
You may choose inhaled sedation. You may this more commonly as laughing gas. This form of sedation has been in use for more than 150 years. All you have to do is breathe. Within minutes, you can experience a relaxing sensation that helps you get through your visit worry-free. When you’re finished, we turn off the gas. By exhaling what’s left in your system, you can feel like yourself in little time, too.
For patients who prefer something a little stronger, we also offer oral sedation. This is a dose of medication taken prior to your appointment. By the time you are ready to sit in the patient chair, you can feel relaxed and worry-free. The effects of this kind of sedation are longer lasting, so you must arrange to have someone else drive you to and from your appointment if you decide on this option.
